Or, how to cope when your toddler is suddenly awake and crying or unwilling to go back to sleep late at night. 1. Gently turn on the lights and don't look at the clock!
Give both of you time to adjust to the light and don't tell yourself or your toddler that you "should" be sleeping. This is highly frustrating and annoying for everyone!
2. Look into your toddler's eyes and quickly scan the scene for obvious signs of a problem.
Diaper change? Is this a medical emergency or not? If yes, call "911". If no, continue reading.
3. Speak in positive, loving and reassuring tones.
I find that repeatedly saying "All is well", or "Everything is OK" seems to help. This helps remind me that it is so even if I still don't know why my toddler is screaming, crying, or generally unhappy about something.
4. Pick up your toddler.
Put your toddler in a baby carrier/sling if you use one.
5. Follow your toddler's lead.
Move in the direction of their pointing finger. They often have an agenda. You get to figure out what it is!
6. Offer a midnight snack of strawberries or other natural treats.
Maybe your toddler, like you, are hungry or thirsty?
7. Sit with your toddler at your computer or keyboard and play.
Do a special activity that might get their attention (distract, distract, distract!).
8. Sing or play soothing songs.
Our toddler responds to certain Native American tunes. She used to really respond to the Baby Einstein music and videos.
9. Bundle up and Go outside to howl at the moon and walk around your property.
This has worked famously since infancy. The air has a great calming quality. The quiet of being outside makes it a magical moment.
10. Go back to bed and nurse/cuddle together.
You both will eventually get back to sleep. Remember, it's times like these that bring you and your toddler closer together. Make it count!

Toddlers Facts & Tips
Naturally, if your child is being bullied at pre-school or at play dates, you'll want to know where were the supposedly supervising parents or teachers? Once your child has divulged the secret, you have every right to ask the adults why they failed to supervise what was happening at their home or at pre-school. Don't send your child back to a home where adult supervision is so lacking that he/she is being hurt. If your child is being harmed in a pre-school, speak to the owner or top-level manager about the lack of supervision by the teachers. If you get no satisfactory answers, remove your child from the school and report the harm done to your child to Child Protection Services.
